Ok.  Listen up.

Everyone needs to go out and buy this magazine.  I don’t even care if you don’t read magazines…you need to make an exception this one time and buy this.

Let’s break this down…

For starters, Kerry Washington is a brilliant, talented goddess and if you aren’t already her fan…what are you waiting for?   Get to know her.  She’s amazing.

Second, Kerry Washington is a beautiful Black actress.

Third, Kerry Washingtin is a beautiful Black actress over the age of 35.

It’s been 7 years since Vanity Fair had a woman of color on their cover.  7 years.  It’s incredible rare for major magazines to put a Black woman on the cover of their magazine. 

It’s incredibly rare for major magazines to put women over the age of 35 on the cover and not make their age an issue. 

 It’s UNHEARD of for major magazines to put BLACK WOMEN over the age of 35 on magazine covers.

Buy this magazine.  Show them it sells.  Show them you want to see more women over the age of 35 on major magazines.  Show them you want to see more BLACK women over the age of 35 on major magazine covers.  Show them you want to see more Black women PERIOD on the covers of major magazines.  Show them that diversity sells.

Plus, seriously…Kerry is amazing.  Buy her cover.  Put your money where your mouth is.  Also, Vanity Fair, for the most part, does a decent job of making these women look glamorous without being too overly sexualized.  This is a sexy picture, for sure.  But it’s not a degrading picture.  There is a difference.  Notice her mouth is closed and she’s engaged.   She is in a swimsuit but she’s not sexualized per se.  Support that kind of thing.

This is all completely true and correct, of course, but on the topic of changes that irreversibly change a child’s body, prithee, go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

If you start ballet at 16, you are too old to ever expect to be able to do it seriously. If you start at 12 you’re too old. If you want to do ballet as a serious thing, as a career, you need to start at like eight years old or even younger, because your bones and joints need to be trained while they’re still flexible in order for you to be able to perform many of the required motions and stances of ballet. In particular, you need to be able to perform turnout of the hips, but all of your joints in your legs and feet will be affected, and this irreversibly changes your body.

And yet! Nobody talks about this as a negative thing! Little girls say they want to be ballet dancers, and if their parents have enough money, that’s what they get to be! Does it cause problems in later life? Yeah, sometimes! Often, even! But nobody talks about that because it’s a thing for cis people to do and so naturally it’s all fine!

Go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

So I started doing this with some candles my sister gave me, and y'know what happened?

Because I used the candle, realised how much I liked my house smelling nice. So, i did more to fill my house with nice smelling stuff. I bought reed defusers, I bought flowers (which I stopped doing cause they smell quickly), I cared more about making sure my bins were empty and my sink was clear. I also developed more of a sense for what smells I did like. Like, I prefer woody smells. Incense and sandlewood.

And I realised how nice my house looked when it was clean. So I made more of an effort to clean my house. And cleaning never felt like a chore because I only cleaned when I wanted to.

And because I was cleaning my house more, I made decisions that helped to keep the house clean more often. I found homes for the loose things that never had a home before. I started remembering where things were because they were usually in their homes. I found or bought things to put things in.

It was hard because I'm not good at it, but slowly I developed those skills and got better at it. I realised how little pride I had had in my own home, and sought out new reasons to be proud. I bought things to put on my walls. I just bought myself a rug this week. I might even invite people over.

Anyway, just saying that maybe enjoying the small, fleeting things, is more important than we expect.
