As a feminist and a creator, one of my greatest fears is making something that fails my own belief system. It’s a deep, vast fear and when it gets ahold of me.

But in writing all sorts of material I’ve learned this— sometimes you have to let that material out of you. Not for consumption. Not for…

I fear this too.

On top of creating characters and work that does this, I also know that I will play roles that do this. I will be a part of this system.

But I take comfort that there are women out there, like Natalie Dormer for example, that I can look up to. Women who know they are playing women in a patriarchy, written in large part by misogynists, but who don’t abdicate their responsibility to those women or their audience. Women who work extra hard to breathe as much real life, as much humanity, and complexity and pathos into those roles as they can.

This will be my weapon.

Modern Farmer | Whey Too Much: Greek Yogurt’s Dark Side

Modern Farmer | Whey Too Much: Greek Yogurt’s Dark Side:
wooliebear:

“For every three or four ounces of milk, Chobani and other companies can produce only one ounce of creamy Greek yogurt. The rest becomes acid whey. It’s a thin, runny waste product that can’t simply be dumped. Not only would that be illegal, but whey decomposition is toxic to the natural environment, robbing oxygen from streams and rivers. That could turn a waterway into what one expert calls a “dead sea,” destroying aquatic life over potentially large areas. Spills of cheese whey, a cousin of Greek yogurt whey, have killed tens ofthousands of fish around the country in recent years.”

Every time I read about a problematic side effect of a trend in food (white quinoa also springs to mind) I just think to myself “there’s too many people on this damn planet.”

But really, this comes from the 20th Century way of thinking that waste products are acceptable. They are not. Humans have to change our way of thinking so that “throwing something away” is no longer an option. Like the proverbial American Indians, we have to learn how to make use of every part of the cow, and BEFORE we start buying/selling the easy parts.

It’s not enough to think “what can I do with this” before you throw something in the garbage. You have to answer that question before you even buy it.

"We [Fraction and his wife, Kelly Sue DeConnick] were pregnant at the time, and while I was out there..."

“
We [Fraction and his wife, Kelly Sue DeConnick] were pregnant at the time, and while I was out there I started to realize that if I had a daughter, there would come a day when I would have to apologize to her for my profession. I would have to apologize for the way it treats and speaks to women readers, and the way it treats its female characters.

I knew that if we had a daughter, because I know my wife and I know the kind of girl she wants to raise and I know the kind of girl I want to raise, she was going to look at what I did for a living and want to know how the fuck I could stomach it. How could I sell her out like that?” Fraction continued. “That conversation is still coming, and I’m bracing for it in the way that some dads brace for their daughter’s first date or boyfriend. I became acutely aware that I had sort of done that thing that lots of privileged hetero cisgendered white dudes do. ‘I’m cool with women, and that’s enough.’ It’s not enough. It’s embarrassing to say, because we somehow have attached shame to learning and evolving our opinions, culturally, but I became aware that there was a deficiency of and to women in my work, and all I could do at that moment was take care of my side of the street.
”

- Writer Matt Fraction on his role on expanding the profile of female characters in the Marvel Universe. (via goodmanw)

I love this quote. If only all male creators (or just “men”) who think of themselves as “cool with women” would have similar realizations.

0ver-doze:

Women read comics and are a driving force behind fandom. I think I could call them the driving force behind fandom and put up a convincing argument. Just think about it: what fandoms have driven America crazy in the last decade? Could anyone dissuade me from saying that they were Harry Potter, Twilight and the Hunger Games? “Avatar” may have put butts in theater seats, but you don’t hear about it… ever. No one is immersed in the world of “Avatar” except James Cameron and people who enjoy wearing Na’vi Zentai suits. “The Avengers” was pretty darn huge and, if Tumblr is any indication, a whopping portion of the people driving that fandom online do not possess a Y chromosome. Women engage in fandom to levels that men do not. When women get behind something, their sheer numbers and passion force it into the mainstream. That’s why you can name the actor who plays that werewolf kid in “Twilight” and probably sing at least the chorus to one Justin Bieber song. What do tween boys like? I have no clue. Sports? Probably sports.”

-
Brett White, Comic Book Resources (via wandrinparakeet)

and yet men remain the most marketed demographic for just about everything.

(via ohhoechno)

I’m pretty sure the only men who spend more time thinking about DC than women on Tumblr are the men who actually work there.

(via touchofgrey37)

I found a post on here from a guy who bemoaned the fact that he couldn’t find girls who liked Young Justice. I replied with a gif of Allison Brie and Yvette Nicole Miller laughing and then asked him if he’s ever actually LOOKED at tumblr before.

Women are a huge force in fandom and especially in nerddom. Frankly we’re intimidating as hell, which is why the “nice guys” are always quick to call us fake fans.

(via justplainsomething)

Sometimes I feel like women are residents of Whoville. How many times and in how many ways do we have to yell “We are here! We are here! We are HERE!” for the people who make media - of ALL kinds - to take real, respectful notice?

gogenericgirl said: Rock whatcha mama gave ya.

That is a really great sentiment, but it’s only half of the point of my post. If you love “what your mama gave you” then by all means rock it and haters to the left.

But if you don’t love it. If you want to change it a little, or a lot. If you don’t feel right in it, if you like something else better, rock THAT and haters to the left.

“What your mama gave you” works really well for some people. Really not for others. Both are fine. Just find a you that you love, and hang out with and listen to people who love that you.

My point is that beauty companies don’t love you - no matter what you look like, they want you to change it.

It’s really fucking empowering to have a self-care ritual or rituals that you have a lot of...

It’s really fucking empowering to have a self-care ritual or rituals that you have a lot of confidence in.

Self-care is an absolute necessity, however you define it for yourself. But because of capitalism and marketing and the patriarchy and shit, women are made to feel insecure about their chosen methods of self-care all the time: You must wear makeup, and shave your legs, and use anti-aging night cream, and shampoo without sulfates, and even if you DO all those things, you’re probably doing them the wrong way or using the wrong products. Advertizing for self-care products and services is designed by for-profit companies to make you insecure about your choices. They are trying to knock you off-balance and make you feel inadequate, so that you will ameliorate that feeling by buying their product.

I have eyebrows that are thicker and darker than the current fashion dictates, but I like them. I care for them in a particular way (threading by a talented and knowledgeable aesthetician to whom I am fiercely loyal) and I’m pretty confident about it.

So today, when the manicurist tried to upsell me - hard - about adding an eyebrow wax to my mani/pedi, I was able to decline without feeling bad about myself for even a split second. Hours later, I realized that my love for my eyebrows and my confidence in a ritual that I have chosen after research and experimentation that I did for myself is like a suit of armor against the slings and arrows of the Beauty Industrial Complex.

Have confidence in yourself - whether you groom your eyebrows carefully or not at all. They are out there trying to poke holes in your armor. Don’t let them.

"I love sleep. It’s the same story up and down the chain of command, from the show’s top executives — Lionsgate’s Chris Selak, ABC Studio’s Stephanie Leifer and ABC’s Channing Dungey — to each of its current editors and all but one of its interns…The landscape of Nashville ‘is obviously way above average,’ says Kimberly Myers, director of diversity for WGA West. ‘It has the potential to change things. The more you get women gaining experience and joining the pool of people regularly considered for jobs changes paradigms — work begets work. It absolutely opens doors.’”

-
Los Angeles Times - ‘Women front Nashville band’

I don’t wanna brag, but I do have 1.5 million Twitter followers so this is kind of my area of expertise. And in my professional opinion the best way to use Twitter is to tell people what’s on your Tumblr. I don’t know if there’s another use for Twitter, really, than to be like, Look! Look what I Tumbled about today!”

- John Green, #1 New York TImes Bestselling Author

"Actors are some of the most driven, courageous people on the face of the earth. They deal with more day-to-day rejection in one year than most people do in a lifetime. Every day, actors face the financial challenge of living a freelance lifestyle, the disrespect of people who think they should get real jobs, and their own fear that they’ll never work again. Every day, they have to ignore the possibility that the vision they have dedicated their lives to is a pipe dream. With every role, they stretch themselves, emotionally and physically, risking criticism and judgment. With every passing year, many of them watch as the other people their age achieve the predictable milestones of normal life - the car, the family, the house, the nest egg. Why? Because actors are willing to give their entire lives to a moment - to that line, that laugh, that gesture, or that interpretation that will stir the audience’s soul. Actors are beings who have tasted life’s nectar in that crystal moment when they poured out their creative spirit and touched another’s heart. In that instant, they were as close to magic, God, and perfection as anyone could ever be. And in their own hearts, they know that to dedicate oneself to that moment is worth a thousand lifetimes.”

- David Ackert, LA Times

Oh, just wait until the one female demon who becomes a true ally for them and starts falling for one of their friends because he was kind to her and you actually get to see some humanity in her ... and then she dies.
